If you’re unable to send text messages (SMS) from your Iridium 9555, the steps below cover the most common causes and solutions. Work through each section to ensure your device is configured correctly.
1. Verify the Service Center Number
The SMS Service Center number must be correctly programmed for messages to be sent successfully.
Steps to check and program the Service Center:
- Power on your Iridium 9555.
- Press the Menu key.
- Select Messages.
- Select Settings, then choose Service Center.
- Enter the following number exactly as shown: 00881662900005.
- Press OK to save.
- Try sending a new SMS message.
2. Use the Correct Dialing Format
Before sending a message, confirm the following:
- You are outside with a clear view of the sky and not surrounded by significant obstructions (trees, buildings, power lines)
- The antenna is fully extended.
- Your phone shows “Registered” on the screen (indicating a successful network connection).
Steps to send an SMS:
- Press Menu.
- Scroll to Messages, then press Select.
- Select Create Message and press Select.
- Type your message. (Use the * key to enter special characters.)
- Press Options, then select Send.
- Choose New Recipient, then press Add.
- Select Enter Number, then press Select.
- You may also choose a contact from your phonebook instead.
- Enter the number in full international format:+ [Country Code] [Area Code] [Phone Number]Example: +14162536008
- Press OK, then press Send to transmit the message.
3. Check That the Recipient Can Receive International SMS
Iridium messages are sent from internationally formatted numbers. If the recipient’s mobile plan blocks international SMS, your message may not be delivered.
Ask the recipient to check with their provider to ensure their service supports SMS from international or satellite phone numbers.
