The Iridium Extreme USB data cable enables a direct connection between your satellite phone and a computer for limited data functionality. This article covers how the cable works, what to expect in terms of data performance, and how to avoid common setup issues.
What the USB Data Cable Is Used For
The USB data cable allows you to connect your Iridium Extreme to a computer or laptop in order to:
- Establish a basic data connection for email and low-bandwidth browsing.
- Perform firmware updates or device configuration (if applicable).
Note: This connection is for data only. It does not support voice calling or messaging directly through the cable.
Connection Setup
To establish a connection:
- Plug the USB cable into the mini-USB port on the left side of the Accessory Adapter.
-
Ensure the Accessory Adapter is securely connected to the phone.
-
Connect the other end of the USB cable to your laptop or computer.
-
Confirm the required software or driver is installed on your computer before use.
Data Performance Expectations
- Data speeds over Iridium’s network are limited, typically around 2.4 kbps.
- This is sufficient for:
- Sending and receiving basic-text emails.
- Accessing very basic websites (text-based only).
- It is not suitable for video, streaming, attachments, or large file transfers.
Airtime charges apply when using data service over the Iridium network.
Troubleshooting Tips
- Driver Compatibility: Ensure that the USB drivers are compatible with your computer's operating system. For instance, some users have reported issues with Iridium's driver-installer program on certain versions of Windows 10. In such cases, using Windows' default drivers or manually installing the Iridium drivers may be necessary.
- External Antenna Use: If you're planning to use an external antenna, ensure you use the appropriate adapter. The Charging/USB/External Antenna adapter should only be used when connecting an external antenna, as its connection temporarily suspends the use of the phone's internal antenna.
