Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is now required to access the Iridium® Push-to-Talk (PTT) portal. MFA adds an extra layer of protection to your account by confirming your identity with a verification code generated on your phone or browser.
This guide shows you how to enable MFA, choose your preferred method, and manage backup codes in case you lose access to your authentication device.
Tip: Setup only takes a few minutes and is required once per user.
Before You Begin
Before setting up MFA, make sure the following items are in place:
- Each user has their own login. Shared or generic accounts are not supported.
- Decide which MFA option you’ll use:
- Authenticator app (recommended): Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authy.
- Browser extension: If mobile phones aren’t permitted, use the Authenticator extension for Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.
- If you manage a team, ensure there are at least two administrators on each account in case one person loses access.
Note: MFA codes are linked to the app or extension used during setup. Once your MFA is active, you’ll only be able to log in with codes from that same app or extension.
Step-by-Step: Enabling MFA
Step 1: Sign In
Go to the Iridium PTT Portal, enter your username and password, then follow the on-screen prompt to enable MFA.
Step 2: Choose Your Method
Select the Authenticator App or Browser Extension when prompted.
If you choose the Authenticator App:
- Open your authenticator app and add a new account.
- Scan the QR code displayed on the portal (or enter the setup key manually).
- Enter the 6-digit code from your app to complete setup.
If you choose Browser Extension:
- Install the Authenticator Extension from your browser’s extension store.
- Click the extension → Add account → scan the QR code or paste the setup key.
- Enter the 6-digit code from the extension to finish setup.

Step 3: Save Your Backup Codes
After setup, you’ll receive two backup codes. These appear only once. Store them in a secure location, such as a password manager, for later use.
Important: Each backup code can only be used once. When both are used or lost, contact your account administrator to reset MFA.
The video below shows you how to log in to the Iridium PTT portal using a backup code.
For Facilities That Restrict Mobile Phones
If mobile phones are not allowed, you can still set up MFA using the Authenticator browser extension:
- Supported browsers: Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Firefox.
- Tested for secure use with Iridium’s PTT portal.
- Generates MFA codes directly in your browser.
Managing MFA After Setup
- Using a backup code: If you can’t access your authenticator app, enter one of your backup codes when prompted.
- All backup codes used or lost: Ask your account administrator to reset MFA for your account. Once reset, sign in again to re-enable MFA and receive new backup codes.
- Administrator lost access: Contact Iridium Customer Service to have MFA disabled temporarily. You can then log in with your password and re-enable MFA to generate new backup codes.
The video below walks you through how to reset multi-factor authentication (MFA) for a user in the Iridium PTT portal.
Note: There’s no limit to how many times MFA can be re-enabled, but you’ll need to scan the QR code and reset your app each time.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | What You Can Try |
|---|---|
| Can’t access your authenticator device | Use one of your backup codes, or ask another admin to reset your MFA. |
| 6-digit code not accepted | Check your device or computer clock (set to automatic time). If reinstalled, rescan the QR code to re-enroll. |
| No mobile phones allowed | Use the Authenticator browser extension instead. |
| Shared login not working | Create individual user accounts. MFA does not support shared credentials. |

Do I get notified when MFA changes?
Yes. Email notifications are automatically sent when you enable MFA, use a backup code, or when your admin resets MFA. -
Will MFA affect my radios or talkgroups?
No. MFA only applies to portal access. Radio operations continue as usual. -
