Updating your Iridium Extreme® firmware helps improve stability, performance, and compatibility with the latest Iridium network features. This article explains how to check your current firmware version and safely complete the HL19004 firmware update using a Windows computer.
Important:
This update can only be performed using a Windows computer.
Remove the SIM card and reinstall the battery before starting the update.
Ensure both your computer and handset batteries are fully charged.
Disable Bluetooth on the computer before beginning the upgrade.
The update may take 20 minutes or more to complete. Do not disconnect the handset or press any keys during this time.
Step 1: Check Your Current Firmware Version
Before updating, check which firmware version is currently installed.
From the main screen, press the Left Soft Key for Menu.
Scroll to Setup and press Select.
Scroll to Phone Information and press Select.
The Firmware Version will be listed as the first option.
If your version is earlier than HL19004, continue with the steps below.
Step 2: Install the Firmware Update Tool
Download the installer file: Iridium Extreme Software Upgrade HL19004 Installer.exe (10 MB).
Once the installation is complete, click Open File.
The upgrade tool and USB drivers will be installed in the following location:
C:\Program Files\Iridium\Extreme\
Follow any on-screen prompts on your computer to Allow, Continue, or Next as needed.
Step 3: Connect the Iridium Extreme to the Computer
Connect your handset to the computer using the Iridium USB cable.
If this is your first time connecting to this PC or USB port, Windows will automatically install the drivers.
Wait until you see the “New Hardware Installed” notification.
If Windows cannot locate the USB driver automatically:
Go to
C:\Program Files\Iridium\Extreme\USB\VCOMPORTto install the driver manually.
Step 4: Launch the Firmware Upgrade Tool
Open Windows Explorer.
Navigate to This PC → OS (C:) → Program Files → Iridium → Extreme → Upgrade_Tool.
Double-click Iridium Extreme Software Upgrade HL19004.exe.
Follow the instructions on the screen to begin the update process.
Note: During the upgrade, the handset screen will display messages such as “Upgrading…”, and may temporarily go blank. This is normal.

Step 5: Wait for the Update to Complete
The update may take 20 minutes or longer, depending on your computer.
Do not disconnect the USB cable or press any keys on the handset.
When complete, the handset will restart automatically.
Your Iridium Extreme is now running the latest firmware version HL19004.
