Updating your Iridium Extreme® to the latest firmware version HL21001 ensures optimal performance, reliability, and compatibility with Iridium’s satellite network. This article explains how to check your current firmware version and complete the update using a Windows computer.
Important:
Only a Windows computer can be used to install this update.
Remove the SIM card and reinstall the battery before starting.
Make sure the batteries in both your computer and Iridium Extreme are fully charged.
Disable Bluetooth on your computer before beginning.
The process can take 20 minutes or more — do not disconnect the handset or press any keys while the update is in progress.
During the update, the phone may display “Upgrading…”, or the screen may temporarily go blank. This is normal.
Step 1: Check Your Current Firmware Version
From the main screen, press the Left Soft Key to open Menu.
Scroll down to Setup and press Select.
Scroll to Phone Information and press Select.
The Firmware Version appears as the first item on the list.
If your version is earlier than HL21001, continue with the update process below.
Step 2: Install the Firmware Update Tool
Download the installer file: Iridium Extreme Software Upgrade HL21001 Installer.exe
When the installation completes, click Open File.
The upgrade tool and USB drivers will be installed in:
C:\Program Files\Iridium\Extreme\
Follow all on-screen prompts to Allow, Continue, or Next, depending on your computer’s notifications.

Step 3: Connect the Iridium Extreme to the Computer
Connect your Iridium Extreme to the computer using the Iridium USB cable.
If this is the first time connecting the phone to this computer or USB port, Windows will automatically install the driver.
Wait for the notification “New Hardware Installed” to appear.
If Windows cannot find the driver automatically:
Navigate to
C:\Program Files\Iridium\Extreme\USB\VCOMPORTto install it manually.
Step 4: Launch the Firmware Upgrade Tool
Open File Explorer on your computer.
Go to This PC → OS (C:) → Program Files → Iridium → Extreme → Upgrade_Tool.
Double-click Iridium Extreme Software Upgrade HL21001.exe.
Follow the on-screen instructions from the Upgrade Tool.
Tip: The update process may take 20 minutes or longer. During this time, do not disconnect the USB cable or press any buttons on the phone.
Step 5: Wait for Completion
The handset will display various progress messages, including “Upgrading…”.
At times, the screen may go completely blank.
Once the process is complete, the phone will restart automatically.
Your Iridium Extreme is now updated to firmware version HL21001.
